Evelyn R. Lewinski

HURLEY, Wis.- Evelyn R. Lewinski, 94, of Ironwood, Mich., died Monday, March 2, 2015, at Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley.

The former Evelyn Kutil was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Louis and Amelia (Erm) Kutil, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1938. She worked as a cashier at various theaters in Ironwood, where she met her future husband, Charles "Chuck" Lewinski. Chuck and Evelyn were married in Hancock, Mich., on July 14, 1941. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1987.

Evelyn was employed in local retail stores and at the Ironwood Daily Globe for 17 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and sang in the Resurrection Choir. She was also a member of the Polish Festival Group and volunteered at the Ironwood Theatre.

Her hobbies included playing volleyball, walking, cross-country skiing and golf. Her family was her greatest joy; a great cook, she enjoyed preparing sumptuous meals for them. She also prided herself as being her son, Pete's, biggest basketball fan and never missed any of his games. She will be dearly missed.

Surviving are her son, Pete (Sylvia), Ironwood; two daughters, Kathy Lewinski (life partner, Richard Jahnke), Madison, and Sandy (David) Stone, El Paso, Texas; five grandchildren, David (Robin) Stone, El Paso, Christopher (Hyen Mi) Stone, Tucson, Ariz., Chuck Stone (Annie George), Dallas, Texas, Jonathan Lewinski (Fatima Hermosura), San Diego, Calif., and Pete Lewinski II, Ironwood; seven great-grandchildren, Katherine, Jessica, Connor, Erin, Trinity, Sye Grace and Sophia Grace; a sister, Elaine Hinke, Merrill; sister-in-law, Patricia Lewinski, Milwaukee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Kutil; and two sisters, Louise Hovey and Frances Surprenant.

Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 12, 2015, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation in the St. Joseph Family Room at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Robb Jurkovich, celebrant.

Rite of Committal and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.

Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewinski Family Scholarship, in care of Luther L. Wright High School, 650 E. Ayer St., Ironwood, MI 49938.
