Eugene A. Martell

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Eugene A. Martell, age 90, of Larch Street in Ironwood, died Saturday, March 14, 2015, in Ironwood. He was born June 14, 1924, in Minneapolis, son of the late Fred and Anne (Schirmer) Martell.

Eugene had lived in Gile, Wis., and was a longtime Ironwood resident.

He had owned and operated Furnace Cleaning and Stovepipe Replacement in Ironwood. He then worked for Superior Bottled Gas, which later became Great Lakes Gas. He retired from Great Lakes Gas.

On Oct. 3, 1946, he was united in marriage with Dorothy Jacquart in Bessemer. She preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2013. 

Eugene was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 31, 1946. He was a member of the Hurley VFW Post 1580. 

He is survived by three sons, William, James and Curtis, all of Ironwood; three daughters, JoAnn (Daniel) Kelly of Summerville, S.C., Diane Cadoret, of Stockton, Kan., and Debbie Pertile, of Ironwood; six grandchildren, Brandon, Ashley and Chris Pertile, Tony and Will Cadoret and Shannon Knowles; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Delore Martell, of Alamogordo, N.M.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Edward; one sister, Irene Kalla; and one granddaughter, Erin Kelly.

Cremation has taken place at the Range Crematory in Hurley. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 19, at noon at the Ketola-Burla Funeral Home in Ironwood. Father Michael T. Hayden will officiate. 

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.  Military rites will be conducted by the Hurley VFW Post 1580 and American Legion Post 58 Honor Guard. Spring inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
