George C. Paul

MARQUETTE, Mich. - George C. Paul, 90, of the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, Marquette, died Saturday, March 21, 2015, in Marquette.

He was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Ironwood, son of the late George and Mary (Hein) Zuchowski. George attended local schools and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 8, 1943, until Nov. 28, 1945. George served in three campaigns; Eastern Mandates, Papua and Western Pacific. In 1970, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Long Beach State.

He was employed as a boilermaker in field construction, an organizer C10 secretary, treasurer and business manager, WA-C10, boilermaker foreman and general business agent in building trades, and business agent and leap chairman in Los Angeles until retirement in 1986.

George was member of St John's Catholic Church in Ishpeming, El Bekel Shrine Temple in Anaheim, Calif., Scotish Rite of Freemasonry S.J. of Long Beach, Golden Trowel Lodge 273 of Douney, Calif., Mellen (Wis.) Lions Club, and Ancient Landmark Lodge 210 of Ashland., Wis.

On July 30, 1963, he was married to the former Harriet E. Hyke at San Pablo del Monte Tlaxcala, Mexico, by Civil Mayor Gerardo Matinez Monara. Harriet preceded him in death.

He is survived by sons, George (Toni) McGarrett of Livonia and Paul (Kathy) Zuchowski of Seattle; daughters, Mary "Mimi" Zuchowski and Barbara Powell, both of Colorado; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Katherine Lillvis of Flushing; stepchildren, Carol (Clem) Chelbowski of Ramsay, Pat (Jack) Richards of Wisconsin, Barbara LeGassa of Ishpeming, Janice Makinen of Ironwood, Renee (Tom) Rouse of Ironwood, Cheryl (Gary) Kleiman of Sarasota, Fla., Angie (Louis) Menara of Hibbing, Minn., John Kaseno of Ironwood and James (Bonnie) Kaseno of Wakefield; a daughter-in-law, Rubie Zuchowski; a sister-in-law, Mary Ree; and nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by a sons, Robert Paul and Dennis Zuchowski; a daughter, Nancy Zuchowski; brothers, Edward Zuchowski and Byron Zuchowski; grandchildren, Adam Zuchowski, Jeff Chelbowski, Shelly LeGassa, Kristin Suzik and Terry Snarski; a great-granddaughter, Katie Barrus; and a stepdaughter, Marge Snarski.

Funeral services will be held at the Ketola-Burla Funeral Home, 635 E. Ayer St., Ironwood on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at 2 p.m. Rev. Robb Jurkovich will officiate. George's family will receive relatives and friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. A flag presentation and prayer will be conducted by the American Legion Post 5 of Ironwood. Burial will be in the Hurley Cemetery.
