Livingston easily wins re-election in Montreal

Montreal, Wis., voters overwhelmingly voted for Brian Livingston to continue his role as Alderman for Ward No. 1 Tuesday as Livingston defeated challenger Dennis Zaleski by a vote total of 52 to 10.

It was one of many local items on ballots across Iron County Tuesday.

Incumbent Leola Maslanka took 32 votes in her unopposed effort to be re-elected as Alderman for Ward No. 2.

In other town elections:

In the town of Carey, the slate of unopposed incumbents were all re-elected, with Chairman Robert Walesewicz and Supervisor Diane Schmidtke receiving 16 votes each and Supervisor Thomas Bainbridge receiving 15 votes.

In the town of Knight, the slate of unopposed incumbents were all re-elected. Chairman Daniel Soine received 25 votes. The two candidates running for the town's two supervisor seats, Kendall Koski and David Leinon, received 30 and 41 votes, respectively.

In the town of Anderson, Robert Bjork got 9 votes to become the town's newly elected chairman. He ran unopposed. Twenty-three "scattering votes" were cast in the race, which Iron County Clerk Mike Saari explained didn't count as they were write-in votes for candidates who hadn't filed the proper paperwork.

According to Saari, a 2013 change to the state's election law requires candidates wanting to run as a write-in candidate in a race with the correct number of candidates appearing on the ballot - in this case, one candidate running for one office - to fill out a GAB-1 form for write-in votes with their name to be counted.

The two incumbent supervisors in Anderson, Jerry Rice and Patrick Hanson, got 22 and 30 votes, respectively, to retain their seats.

In the town of Kimball, the full slate of incumbents ran unopposed. Ray Ahonen got 58 votes, supervisors John Smith and Raymond Kivi got 54 and 48 votes, respectively. Clerk Irene Salzmann got 60 votes and Treasurer Pamela Backman got 61 votes.

In the town of Saxon, Andrew Rowe was elected to the office of chairman with 89 votes. Incumbent supervisors, Kelly Thurow and Karl Krall faced two challengers in the race for the town's two supervisor seats. The two highest vote recipients were elected. Thurow and Krall successfully held off challengers Stacy Ofstad and Jason Maki to win re-election. Krall got 67 votes, Thurow got 52 votes, Maki got 48 votes and Ofstad got 41 votes. Kathryn Brauer was elected clerk with 99 votes and Treasurer Sue Brauer was re-elected with 95 votes.

In the town of Gurney, the entire slate of incumbents were re-elected. Chairman Tom Innes got 19 votes, supervisors Vernon Moor and Darren Rowe got 14 and 17 votes respectively. Clerk Denys Vargovich and Treasurer Jessie Bender got 18 votes each.

In the town of Oma, the entire slate of unchallenged incumbents were re-elected. Chairman Richard Christianson got 61 votes. Supervisors Larry Erickson and Steve Finco got 59 and 46 votes, respectively. Clerk Denise Schmitz-Enking was elected with 63 votes and Treasurer Linda Kuduk got 61 votes.

In the town of Pence, the slate of unopposed incumbents were re-elected as well. Chairman Michael Paternoster got 29 votes. Supervisors Joe Olson and George Nasi each got 28 votes.

In the town of Sherman, Gerald Luke was elected as chairman with 57 votes. Both incumbent supervisors Gerald Mikula and Robert Lepper ran unopposed and got 69 and 68 votes, respectively. Gerard Murrin got 80 votes to become treasurer. With no clerk running in the election, the current clerk Gail Sprangers got the most write-in votes with nine. A total of five write-in votes were also cast for other candidates in the race.

As of Monday, Iron County had 4,250 registered voters according to Saari.
