MDOT outlines plans for Cloverland Drive project

IRONWOOD — The Michigan Department of Transportation said Friday one lane of U.S. 2 will remain open during the summer’s reconstruction project from Curry Street to Roosevelt Street.

That’s the same arrangement as was used for the first half of the project last year, from the city’s recreational vehicle tourist park to Curry Street.

Westbound traffic will be detoured on Jackson Road to Greenbush Street. Eastbound traffic will be maintained on U.S. 2.

MDOT and the city of Ironwood invite the public to a meeting to discuss the U.S. 2 (Cloverland Drive) reconstruction project that is planned to begin in May and finish in October.

The April 30, 5 p.m. meeting in the Memorial Building will include a brief presentation covering the work scheduled for this summer, followed by an opportunity for residents and business owners to ask questions or speak one-on-one with MDOT officials.

The project contractor, Hebert Construction, of Iron River, will also be on hand.

The mile-long project will involve widening each of the four lanes from 11 feet to 12 feet. It will include utility upgrades, sidewalks and construction of a center left-turn lane at the Lake Street signal.

All businesses in the project area will remain open during construction. Parking will be available along side streets or immediately behind many businesses.

MDOT stressed access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

People with questions before the meeting may contact 866-584-8100.

Hebert Construction was the low bidder for the project at $5,299,270, according to MDOT.

The city will fund sewer and water improvement costs through a federal U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development grant-loan package.

The city plans a meeting for Tuesday, April 28, at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the infrastructure work to be completed as part of the project.
