Ironwood Library to mark Carnegie Day

IRONWOOD - In celebration of National Library Week and the Smithsonian Institute's "The Way We Worked" exhibit's visit to Ironwood, the Ironwood Carnegie Library is hosting an Andrew Carnegie Day open house Friday.

Cake and refreshments will be served from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. There will also be a display of books on local history and Carnegie - a turn-of-the-century industrialist and library benefactor - as well as information on the library.

"We're inviting the public to take a look at our beautiful library," said library official Lynne Wiercinski. "There will be tours if anybody is interested in knowing a little bit more about the history of the library. We are on the historic register."

Ironwood's library is the oldest, continuously operating Carnegie Library in the state. The building was built in 1901 and opened in 1902.

The festivities will also include the unveiling of a collage of photos taken of Carnegie, actually a life-sized cardboard cut-out of him, at work around town.

"I've been going around the community taking photos of 'flat' Andrew Carnegie at different businesses," said Wiercinski. "We put Andrew Carnegie to work in our community, so we'll be displaying that."
