Mercer students work to install ball field bleachers

MERCER - Spectators at the community baseball diamond in Mercer will soon have improved seating as they watch the ballgame as students in the Mercer technological education classes have been busy installing new bleachers at the park.

In partnership with the town's parks committee, the classes are working on assembling the bleacher kit throughout the day, said tech-ed instructor Isaac Markus.

"They came as a kit, just a big pile of bleacher parts and directions. So we had to sort through (the parts) and ... (then began) putting them together," Markus said.

In exchange for the students' labor, the committee will be purchasing tools to be donated to the school, Markus said. The exact tools that the school needs is still being determined, according to Markus.

In addition to the tools, the committee hoped that the project would help instill some community spirit in the students, according to committee member Noel Brandt.

"We felt that (the project) helps the kids take a little bit of ownership of the community," Brandt said.

Installation is expected to be completed by this summer according to Markus.
