Katherine 'Sis' Gulan

HURLEY, Wis. — On June 6, 2015, we will celebrate the life of Katherine “Sis” Gulan, longtime resident of Gile, who entered God’s loving arms on Nov. 23, 2014, at age 95.

Katherine was born in Montreal on June 11, 1919, the daughter of James and Margaret (Milo) Nagro. She attended the Montreal School and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School. She married Wallace Gulan in 1943. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Peggy Noskoviak and Nancy Reinsvold, and a brother, James Nagro, Jr.

She is survived by sons, Terry, Stevens Point, and Duane (Joyce Gayan), Gile; a daughter, Kathy (Dean) Brotten, Coon Rapids, Minn .; grandson, Scott (Nicole) Gulan; and great-grandsons, Sam and Max, all of Stevens Point; sisters, Lucille Armata, Ironwood, Mich., Priscilla (Peter) Jardine, Love Park, Ill., and Jacqualine Robinson, Cottage Grove, Minn .; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

Sis was employed at the Montreal Post Office, Kodiak Corporation, and St. Mary’s convent. She was an excellent cook, making pasties and raviolis to-die-for! She loved canning, knitting, doing crafts, gardening, playing cards, and enjoyed spending time with friends and family at their cottage on Pine Lake. Her family meant the world to her.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Women’s Council, the Iron County Senior Citizens Club and the Gile Flowage Association. Sis was an avid Packer fan and would recall trips way-back to see the Milwaukee Braves and “Hammerin” Hank Aaron play ball.

The family would like to extend thanks to Sis’s special friend Lois Samardich, as well as Sis’s Avanti caregivers, who she thought of more as friends, especially her “best friend” Lynn Tijan who went above and beyond in her care, and to the staff at Villa Maria and Sky View Nursing Homes.

The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday, June 6, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley, from 10 a.m. until Mass at 11 a.m.

Inurnment will follow immediately after at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

A celebratory luncheon will follow at Joany’s Sidekicks in Iron Belt.

Like Mary Tyler Moore, those who knew her knew that Sis “had spunk.” She will be missed.

Arrangements are with McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood. Condolences may be given online at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.
