Wakefield man in custody following police standoff

WAKEFIELD — At around 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Gogebic County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a suicidal male at his Wakefield residence, according to a department news release.

Officers on the scene, along with a family member, were able to establish contact with the 30-year-old man, who was in the home with his 3-year-old son.

The man refused to leave the home and, according to the release, threatened to shoot the officers on the scene.

This led to the activation of the Gogebic/Iron Area SWAT Team and a request was made for the Michigan Department of Corrections Emergency Response Team to assist with the situation, according to the release.

Neighboring homes and businesses were evacuated, according to the release, as a perimeter around the situation was established.

Shortly following the creation of the perimeter, the man released the son before retreating inside the home and continuing to threaten officers, the release said.

The man was taken into custody at approximately 10 p.m., according to the release, as he exited the home.

He is lodged in the Gogebic County Jail, pending arraignment on four counts of assaulting, resisting or obstructing an officer and one count of second degree child abuse. According to the release, bond is set at $50,000.
