Wakefield city council hears of progress on blight control, sewer work, park improvements

WAKEFIELD - Work continues on tearing down an old laundromat along Sunday Lake Street in Wakefield. The building had been condemned by the Wakefield city council.

At the council's meeting Monday evening, Mayor Les Schneck read a letter from a resident thanking the council and city manager Margot Anderson for taking action on the blight issues in town.

"If you look today, one of the places is being knocked down and that is through the hard work of our city manager," Schneck said. "There are other places in town that are starting to pick up as well."

The council heard Anderson recently met with the director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to discuss the city's sewer issues.

"I think we owe a debt of gratitude to our city manager for taking the time to go to Lansing and meet with the DEQ," Schneck said. "People don't always see the hard work or the positives going on with these kind of issues."

The council also heard about continuned improvements at Eddy Park, including work on the pier and major improvements to the bathrooms.

The council approved the recommendation by the Housing Commission Executive Director Sheri Graham to grant Mary Ozzello a five-year term on the housing commission.

The council heard city offices will be closed Friday, July 3, and garbage collection for that day will take place Thursday, July 2.

The next Wakefield city council meeting will be held Monday, July 13, at 5:30 p.m.
