Library hosts book reading, tea party

IRONWOOD - Girls and boys dressed in their finest clothes for the sixth annual Fancy Nancy Tea Party on Thursday afternoon, hosted by the Ironwood Carnegie Library.

For the "year's biggest event," more than 20 children attended the party at the Ironwood Memorial Building.

During the party, assistant library director Lynne Wiercinski told the children a story about Nancy, a young girl who loves everything fancy.

Written by Jane O'Conner, "Fancy Nancy" is a series of children's books following Nancy's adventures to make everything in her life "fancy."

"Nancy loves using French words, loves tea parties and emphasizes manners," Wiercinski said as she read "Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique."

After story time, it was time for tea. For the tea party, Lisa Richards and other volunteers served the children apple juice, cupcakes, cookies, vegetables and fruit.

Sitting at the long table, Ellie Schneller, 2, enjoyed her tea during her first tea party.

"This is fun," she said.

Once the tea was all gone, the children went to the auditorium for arts and crafts. Kids decorated paper leaves and flowers with feathers, jewels and felt.

According to Wiercinski, the Fancy Nancy Tea Party is "the event of the season" for local children.

Over the years, it has become so popular that Carnegie Library had to move the event to a larger space to accommodate all the children and their parents or guardians.

Richards said the children had good manners. As a reward, they all got goody bags filled with trinkets and treats.
