Eva A. Verhelst

IRONWOOD, Mich. — Eva A. Verhelst, 99, of Ironwood, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood.

She was born July 22, 1916, in Ironwood, daughter of the late John and Eva (Ostruska) Walek, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1933. She was employed as a cashier at McLellan’s in downtown Ironwood from 1934 to 1979.

On Dec. 1, 1945, she was married to Eugene Verhelst. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1988.

Eva was a warm-hearted person and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood.

Surviving are a niece, Patsy Butala; and four nephews, John Walek, Dennis O’Callaghan, David O’Callaghan and Donald O’Callaghan.

Besides her parents and husband, Eva was predeceased by one sister and two brothers.

Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m., in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, with Pastor Kurt Brandon officiating.

Committal and interment will follow.
