Cyril P. Sorrels

ASHLAND, Wis. - Cyril P. Sorrels, 96, of Gurney, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, in Ashland.

He was born on May 2, 1919, in Bismark, N.D., the son of Charles and Selma (Johnson) Sorrels. He was a longtime Gurney resident.

On Oct. 15, 1946, he was united in marriage with Dolores E. Luedke in Williams, Minn. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2014.

Cy was in the U.S. Army with the 36th Infantry Division known as the Texas Rangers, who fought valiantly in WWII and was recalled during the Korean War, serving in Hokkaido, Japan.

He managed the Swanee Superior Spud Farm for many years. Cy was involved in many civic activities, including Iron County Fair Board, the school boards in both Williams, Minn., and Hurley, Town Chairman and Supervisor for the Town of Gurney, supporter of the Republican Party, President and member of the Wisconsin Potato-Vegetable Growers Association and a member of the Range Art Association.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Little Girl's Point and a past commander and member of the Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371.

Cy truly enjoyed photography, including countless weddings and local landmarks, telling jokes, playing cribbage, hunting, fishing and, in his later years, gardening.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen (Louise) Sorrels, of Gurney, and Doug (Patricia) Sorrels, of Mellen; two daughters, Cheryl (Dave) Asplund, of Champlin, Minn., and Beverly (Jeff) Daugherty, of Muskegon, Mich .; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his very special friends, the George Beck family.

In addition to his wife, Dolores, he was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Little Girl's Point, with Vicar Rick Williams officiating. A graveside service and military rites by the Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371 will follow at the Gurney Cemetery.
