Ironwood school board renews GOISD tech classes contract

Ironwood — The Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education renewed a contact with the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District Monday that ensures area students will continue to be able to take welding and business management classes at Luther L. Wright.

According to the terms of the contract, the classes will be open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, with 51 percent of students coming from Ironwood and 49 percent coming from outside the district.

GOISD will pay the district a total of $27,257 for offering the classes, according to the contract.

According to information presented to the board, this amount includes the costs for Ann Wuorinen to continue to teach the business management, also known as management support, class.

The contract is the same as last year, according to Superintendent Tim Kolesar, and is set to expire June 30, 2016.

In other action:

— The board heard a presentation from Paul Kostelnik, the president of the Friends of the Miners Memorial Park, regarding future plans for the park. The board agreed additional meetings were necessary to clarify how the group and school district would interact regarding the land owned by the district connected to the park.

— The board voted to seek bids for the district’s low sulfur diesel fuel contract.

— The board hired Andrew DiGiorgio as a second drivers education instructor.

— The board approved the Luther L. Wright K-12 improvement plan.

— Randall Kashich addressed the board on several concerns he had regarding the manner the district was being run.

— The board accepted the resignation of Henry McPherson as a bus driver/custodian for the district. Kim Berlin was hired as a monitor for third through sixth grades. Joe Bravatto was hired as a bus driver/custodian. Paul Mattson resigned as sophomore class advisor and Camp Superior ropes course coordinator. He was also hired as the 7-12 student senate advisor. Kathy Saari, Sandra Genisot and Col. Sandra Keefer were hired as the junior, sophomore and freshman class advisors respectively. A request by Mary Sommer for approximately a month off was also granted by the board.
