Roy Douglas 'Buttercup' Lane

WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Roy Douglas "Buttercup" Lane, 95, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2015.

Roy was born on Feb. 9, 1920, in Wakefield, the 10th child of John Charles and Martha (Trevithick) Lane. He attended Wakefield High School and graduated in 1939.

Roy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army under General George Patton in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Dec. 28, 1945. Roy received the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Battle Stars, two Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe and Good Conduct Medal.

Returning to Wakefield, Butter worked at Connor Lumber and Land Company. He retired as foreman in 1986.

On Dec. 12, 1949, Roy was united in marriage to Eleanor "Ellie" Kangas in Minneapolis. They celebrated more than 57 years of marriage before her passing on Nov. 7, 2006.

Roy was born again under the ministry of the Rev. Paul King at Calvary Baptist Church in Wakefield, where Butter faithfully labored for many years.

Roy was a supporting member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9084 in Wakefield.

Butter enjoyed rock hounding, playing horseshoes, gardening and coffee time at Randall's Bakery. He looked forward to Friday fish fries and took pleasure in watching the Detroit Lions play.

Butter was happiest when he assisted others and kept his dry sense of humor to the end.

Roy is survived by two daughters, Martha "Marty" (John) Olson, of Wakefield, and Susan Lane, of Marquette; a son, Daniel "Chipper" (Evelyn), of Eau Claire, Wis .; a grandson, Robert Lane (Ali Willame), of Green Bay, Wis., and many friends.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters, William, Martha, John, Thomas, Fred, Edward, Pearl, Albert and Arthur.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 to 11 a.m., at Calvary Baptist Church, at the corner of Lahti and Peters Streets in Wakefield, with the honor guard beginning at 10:15 a.m.

A memorial service will follow the visitation at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Riley officiating.

Following the service, military rites will take place at the church under the auspices of Wakefield American Legion Geroux Post 11 and Wakefield VFW Post 9084 Honor Guard.

Lunch will be served at the church fellowship hall following the military service.

Committal services and interment will take place at a later date at Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Gogebic Medical Care Facility for their excellent care of Butter during his stay there.
