Richard W. 'Richie' Hewitt Sr.

HURLEY, Wis. - Richard W. "Richie" Hewitt Sr., 73, of Southgate Village, Hurley, died peacefully Saturday evening, Oct. 24, 2015, in his apartment, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief battle with cancer.

He was born May 26, 1942, in Ironwood, Mich., son of the late Jack Hewitt and Fannie (Saari) Hewitt Hockin, and attended J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley. He served in the Wisconsin National Guard and during his service was activated into the regular Army during the Berlin Crisis. He then worked at Ahonen Lumber Co. and White Pine Copper Co. until the mine closed, retiring from Metal Powder Components in Coldwater, Mich. and returning to Hurley.

Richie enjoyed playing softball, fishing, hunting and watching his Minnesota Vikings. He especially enjoyed going to the casino. He dearly loved his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be deeply missed.

He married the former Kathleen A. Packmayer on June 26, 1961, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ironwood. She preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 2014.

Surviving are his four children, Rick Hewitt Jr., Coldwater; Paula (Mark) Sbraggia, Montreal; Bonnie (Ryan) Krenzalek, Coldwater, and Carri Hewitt (Richard Galarno), Saxon; nine grandchildren, Nicole (Brandon) Pertile, Cory (Heather) Sbraggia, Sammi Sbraggia, Josh (Erica) Krenzalek, Cassandra Krenzalek (Travis), Alyssa Caruso, and Paige, Whitney and Maddee Hewitt; eight great-grandchildren, Briana, Peyton, Maleah, Braxton, Addisyn, Emersyn, Chloe and Brooklyn; a brother, Rodney "Bunter" (Donna) Hewitt, Hurley; sister, Jackie (Bob) Saari, Wausau; brother-in-law, John (Marilyn) Packmayer, Menominee, Mich .; sister-in-law, Karen (John) O'Brien, Manitowish; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends at Southgate.

Besides his parents and wife, Richie was predeceased by a brother, James Hewitt; stepfather, Richard "Red" Hockin; sisters-in-law, Joann Hewitt and Patricia Kimball; niece, Debbie Hewitt; and nephew, Dale Saari.

Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
