Maitland F. Harvey

HURLEY, Wis. - Maitland F. Harvey, 89, of Hurley, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, Oct. 28, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Mait was born on Dec. 19, 1925, in Chicago, the son of Maitland B. and Nettie G. (Maloney) Harvey. He attended Grant High School in Fox Lake, Ill. and graduated in 1944. Mait was a member of the football and boxing teams.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and was honorably discharged on Nov. 4, 1945.

On June 1, 1946, Mait was united in marriage to Ruth Marian Willing in Round Lake, Ill. They made their home in Lake Villa, Ill. for more than 38 years and were blessed with four children.

He owned and operated Mait Harvey Builders in Lake Villa and was a master carpenter.

Mait and Ruth relocated to Hurley in 2000 to enjoy their retirement years.

He was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church and the Wakefield, Mich., American Legion Geroux Post 11.

Mait loved puttering in his shop and woodworking was his hobby. He enjoyed making wooden toys for his grandchildren, beautiful wooden rocking horses and clocks.

Over the years, Mait and Ruth took pleasure in traveling all over the country.

Mait is survived by his loving wife of more than 69 years, Ruth; two sons, Alan (Carol), of Mabel, Minn., and Steve (Veronica), of Wakefield; a daughter, Virginia (Raymond) Morby, of Burlington; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Gail and Billy Thompson, of Wakefield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Paul, on Aug. 22, 2014; and his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Cal Davis.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 10 to 11 a.m., at Lakeside Memorial Chapel in Wakefield, with the honor guard beginning at 10:15 a.m. A memorial service will follow the visitation at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Kurt Kovanen officiating.

Interment will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield, with a military graveside service under the auspices of Wakefield American Legion Geroux Post 11 and Wakefield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9084 Honor Guard.
