Bessemer — Former Erwin Township Clerk Prisilla Gerovac was arraigned on two felony embezzlement charges Oct. 27 in Gogebic County District Court in Bessemer.

Gerovac is charged with one count of embezzlement by a public official and one count of embezzlement by an agent or trustee.

The first count is punishable by up to 10 years in prison or $5,000. The second count carries a punishment of up to 5 years in prison and/or $10,000 or three times the amount embezzled, whichever amount is greater.

Township Supervisor Larry Grimsby, told the Daily Globe he discovered “discrepancies” in the township’s finances in early April, which kick-started the investigation.

Gerovac resigned as township clerk in June.

Grimsby said he was glad that the process has now entered the court system.

“I’m pleased that we are finally moving forward (with the case),” Grimsby told the Daily Globe Tuesday. “Now we are at a point where we can come to a conclusion in the near future.”

Gerovac will be back in court on Monday for a probable cause hearing.
