IronwoodGogebic County officials are preparing for another project next year at the Gogebic-Iron County Airport.

The county board last week approved a contract with Mead & Hunt, Inc., for professional design services for a terminal apron rehabilitation project.

Airport manager Mike Harma said Wednesday Mead & Hunt will draw up blueprints for the project, which has an estimated cost of around $500,000.

Mead & Hunt, which has Upper Peninsula offices in Marquette and Norway, has been working on Gogebic-Iron Airport projects for many years. County board member and Gogebic-Iron Airport Board Chairman Jim Oliver, of Ironwood, said the county has a five-year plan for airport improvements.

Harma said bids will be awarded in the spring for a summer project.

County board chairman Joe Bonovetz, of Bessemer, was authorized to sign the necessary documents for the project.

The improvement projects at the airport are mostly federally and state funded, with the county paying only 2.5 percent of the costs.

Harma said a milling and filling blacktop project for the taxiway is scheduled for 2017.
