Ironwood - In the holiday spirit, area residents of all ages constructed gingerbread houses at Luther L. Wright High School Saturday for the annual Jack Frost Gingerbread House Contest.

Throughout the morning and into the afternoon, gingerbread chairperson Niki McRae, of Ironwood, said more than 80 gingerbread house contractors attended.

During the contest, children and adults made candy-coated homes with candy doors, mint shutters and frosting foundations.

Builders were able to bring their own structures or use provided ones with free building materials and decorations, including over 100 pounds of frosting, candies, cookies, sprinkles and "holiday treats."

McRae said a local business provided the free building supplies and several volunteers did their part to make the event possible.

Looking for a fun family activity, the Brown family participated. Heather Brown, of Ironwood, said she was a finalist in the adult category before.

Sitting with her family, Gabby Sutcliffe, 7, of Bessemer said she likes building gingerbread houses to have fun and was building a "castle."

Completed gingerbread houses are on display today at River Valley Bank and will be displayed until Dec. 11.

McRae said the workshop allowed participants a place to work on their entries. Builders who didn't want to enter the contest took their creations home.

Entries will be accepted at River Valley Bank. McRae said the deadlines are Tuesday, Nov. 24 and Tuesday, Dec. 1. Drop off times are from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Following the Jack Frost Parade on Dec. 4, River Valley Bank will be Santa's Headquarters, where folks can join Santa and Mrs. Claus for treats and refreshments.

Amy Anderson, River Valley Bank Marketing Manager, said this is a "festive" way for the bank to give back to the "little people in the community."

"It's a way for us to open our doors and let them in," she said.
