Gladys E. 'Glady' Danowski

IRONWOOD, Mich. — Gladys E. Danowski, 89, of Ironwood, died peacefully Saturday morning, April 9, 2016, at Aspirus Grand View Hospital in Ironwood.

The former Gladys E. Kilponen was born April 9, 1927, in Ironwood, daughter of the late John (Art) and Martha (Maki) Kilponen, and was a 1945 graduate of Luther L. Wright High School. She worked at the Hanson Glove Factory in Ironwood for three years, in the kitchen at the Elks Gogebic Country Club for Betty Kolesar, and was employed as a sales associate at the JC Penney Co. in downtown Ironwood for 26 years, retiring in 1989.

Glady was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood and a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She enjoyed people and was known as quite a character. She also enjoyed knitting and word puzzles, and was an avid reader. Most of all, she loved her guys, her two grandsons and two great-grandsons. She always referred to her son-in-law, Rick, as her hero.

On April 26, 1947, Glady was united in marriage to Joseph W. Danowski at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church rectory by the late Father Frank Ronkowski. Joe preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 2004.

Surviving are her daughter, Terry (Rick) Hartwig, Marquette; two grandsons, Tim Hartwig (Jayme), Denver, and Todd (Rose) Hartwig, Portland, Ore .; two great-grandsons, Gavin and Troy; sister-in-law, Gloria Kilponen, Milwaukee; special nephew, Dale Pryor, Ironwood; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and great-granddog, Lucy.

In addition to her parents and husband, Glady was predeceased by brothers, John and Ronnie Kilponen; and a sister, Blanche Steele.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with Pastor Kurt Brandon officiating.

Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Private committal and interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, later this spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church, E5104 E. Margaret St. Ironwood, MI 49938.
