Veterans hold annual steak feed fundraiser

HURLEY - The Gogebic Iron Range Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 529 held their 26th annual Steak Feed Fundraiser Saturday evening at the Iron County Memorial Building.

"I've waited all day for this," said attendee Tina Martinsek "Every year, the steaks are good." The event kicked off with a raffle and door prizes.

Out back, Kyle Thompson and Terry Seibel stood over a grill flipping dozens of steaks. "Our steaks are awesome; they're hand-cut and everything," said Thompson. Over 400 steaks were served in previous years.

People came in and placed their order, then socialized with fellow veterans and locals while waiting for their steak.

Along with steaks, there was a wide variety of dishes, including free beer and soda, as well as a cake made in memory of a local fallen veteran available for attendees.

There was a raffle for a 50-inch flat screen television along with several door prizes donated by local businesses, including a mattress set.

There was live music by Marty's Goldenaires and later the Mad Trappers. The event went on until midnight.

The VVA is a non-profit organization. Proceeds for the event go towards local charities, school scholarships and other various causes for those in need.

"We're happy with that" said member Arvid Sivula. For the veterans it's a chance to "visit one another," said Sivula, "we enjoy putting on these events."

The organization's next event will be the Mercer Loon Party in August.
