Ontonagon — October is breast cancer awareness month and the free mammograms sponsored by the Ontonagon County Cancer Association will be held for two weeks out of the month.
Cancer association president Bev Meagher announced the weeks of Oct. 10-14 and 17-21 will be free mammograms.
Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., women can call (906)884-8137 to schedule a mammogram. In consideration for the employees at Aspirus Hospital, no calls for appointments should be made until Oct. 10. No insurance will be needed or asked for as women can just register and get the procedure done.
Meagher pointed out that the ability to sponsor free mammograms is the result of the generosity of the people of Ontonagon County.
Ontonagon County Cancer Board members note that in the past years the bi-annual free mammogram program has detected a number of early cancer and urges women to take advantage of the opportunity.
The free mammogram program alternates each year with free PSA tests for men.
