IronwoodIronwood Public Safety Department Director Andrew DiGiorgio announced a promotion and introduced new officers at Monday’s city commission meeting.

Matt Sterbenz was promoted to sergeant over the summer after Ron Carpenedo retired.

DiGiorgio said Sterbenz has been with the department for 14 years and was selected from three or four candidates for the sergeant’s position. “It’s a great addition,” said DiGiorgio, who said a committee was formed to consider the sergeant’s position.

He said it’s not often that such a promotion is made in the department.

“They spoke highly of all of the candidates,” he said.

Tony Beaudette and Adam Graser were introduced Monday as new part-time officers in the department. Emily Rady has also joined the IPSD, but she didn’t attend the commission meeting.

“It’s good to have these certified officers on board,” DiGiorgio said.

He also praised three officers for their efforts in helping save an Ironwood man who suffered a heart attack while riding his bike on a weekly community ride.

Andrew Leiphart, Sheryl Norman and Adam Clemens will receive life-saving pins for their efforts in helping to revive Ken Wegmeyer, DiGiorgio said.

DiGiorgio said the officers are humble about the recognition. “They consider it as doing their jobs,” he said.
