Hurley — The Hurley City Council on Wednesday approved a letter to be sent to legislators requesting more state funding for road repairs.

Mayor Joe Pinardi said the resolution resulted after all 72 counties met recently to discuss the lack of road funding.

The Hurley resolution cites a study that says the condition of Wisconsin’s highways ranks in the bottom third in the country.

It says tax levy limits do not allow for local governmental agencies to make up for “the deterioration of state funding.”

Pinardi said raising gas taxes would be an option, or “whatever they need to do.”

The mayor said the city’s resolution will be sent to Madison, along with one approved by the county board.

In other business Wednesday, the council:

—Approved a conditional use permit for Lori Munn, of 210 Maple St., to operate a single-chair cosmetology shop. The planning and zoning committee had recommended the approval after letters of support were received from residents of that area.

—Set trick-or-treating hours for Monday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m., although many children will attend a Fun Frolic at the Iron County Memorial Building on the previous Saturday.

—Agreed to set up a special budget workshop session for Thursday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m.

—Approved a recommendation from the finance committee to add a no-fault sewer backup policy to the city’s liability insurance at a cost of $2,654 annually.

—Agreed to replace two large-diameter water meters at a cost of $1,500 apiece.

—Learned the next council meeting will be on Tuesday, Nov. 15 because the regular meeting date, Nov. 8, falls on election day.
