Wetland presentation planned

OMA, Wis. — The Iron County Citizens’ Forum and Iron County Lakes and Rivers Alliance are offering a presentation on the importance of wetlands.

“Putting Wetlands to Work for Your Community,” by Kyle Magyera, the local government outreach specialist for the Wisconsin Wetlands Association, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“Healthy wetland landscapes contribute to the health, safety and livability of nearly every Wisconsin community,” Magyera said. “This presentation will share perspectives on how wetlands benefit our communities.”

Event organizers said the July 11 storm that caused flooding in northern Iron County shows the importance of wetland management efforts — such as wetland protections, stream and lake shoreline buffer zones and other methods of reducing surface runoff — to “slow the flow” of water.

Magyera’s talk will focus on new wetland data, wetland management efforts that have been shown to improve lake and river health and locally led wetland conservation, according to a press release for the event. It will also emphasize a new model wetland conservation ordinance that could be used in the region to respond to future floods, maintain vulnerable infrastructure and improve water quality.
