Ontonagon — The Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital Foundation has reached a little over one-third of its fundraising goal for the purchase and construction of a canopy over the hospital’s main entrance.

The foundation has been seeking community support to raise the $199,000 for the front entrance canopy, designed for safe access to the main entrance to the hospital, according to Jim Jessup, the hospital foundation president.

Jessup told the foundation board members last week of the $72,000 raised — $30,000 was from service or corporate entities, and the remainder from families and individuals.

“We are getting a good mix of donors,” Jessup said.

The hospital’s construction project includes 1,460 square-feet of new construction and 6,750 square-feet of renovation. The original plans included a canopy over the emergency entrance, but not the front entrance. Foundation members felt the front entrance would provide the shelter for those using the main door and began the campaign. Jessup stressed all donations are tax deductible.

The foundation decided the proceeds from its popular Christmas concert, which will be Dec. 9, will go to the canopy project.

The foundation was founded to direct critical community resources necessary to advance the quality of care at the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital. Past projects have included raising funds and purchasing: sleeper chair for visitors, beauty shop renovations, Bi Pap machine, patient lift, accuvein devise, label printer system for residents clothing, microscopes for clinic, EVOLV stand for PT, centrifuge for the lab, external defibrillator and raising funds for diabetic education.

Donations can be directed to the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital Foundation 601 S Seventh St. Ontonagon MI 49953.
