Chester H. Turula

RAMSAY, Mich. - Chester H. Turula, 85, a lifelong resident of Ramsay, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, 2016, at his home.

Chester was born on March 14, 1931, in Wakefield, a son of John and Lillian (Fingeroos) Turula. He grew up in Ramsay and attended the Ramsay School and A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer.

On Feb. 17, 1951, Chester was united in marriage to Eleanor M. Wuorinen at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironwood.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged as a corporal on Feb. 8, 1954.

Chester was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay and a supporting member of Bessemer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3673.

In earlier years, he was a dedicated member of the Bessemer Township Volunteer Fire Department and played on the Old-timers baseball team for Fastelin's Bar.

Chester worked in the Peterson Mine until its closure and then worked for many years at White Pine Copper Company. He retired in 1993.

Chester is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Eleanor; a daughter, Gena (Michael) Hartmon, Hudson, Wis .; a son, David (Theresa), Bessemer; two grandsons, Jory and Jason Turula, both of Bessemer; three brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law, Irene Hewitt and Jean Wuorinen, both of Ironwood, Kenneth (Beverly) Wuorinen and Linda (Hans) Anderson, both of Bloomington, Minn., and Jerry (Ann) Wuorinen, Wakefield; and numerous Godchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; his twin brother at birth; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Tiami Gustafson, Beda (Alpha) Giackino and Ruth (Filmore) Johnson; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Matt and Saima Wuorinen; as well as three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Donald Hewitt, Matt (Leona) Wuorinen, Leslie Wuorinen and Viola Winkka.

In accordance with Chester's wishes, cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, E8223 Sanders Road, with the Rev. Timothy J. Steckling officiating.

Following the service, a flag presentation and a rendition of Taps will take place at the church.

A luncheon will be served at the church fellowship hall following the military service.

Inurnment will take place at a later date at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer.
