Grbavcich odd man out in Ironwood Township trustee race

Four of the five candidates in the Ironwood Township Board of Trustees race were happy Tuesday night, with incumbents Bernard Brunello and Kevin Lyons, along with newcomers Bev Michaels and Marlene Saari-Mieloszyk winning seats on the board.

Saari-Mieloszyk received the most votes in the race, capturing 21 percent of the voters with 776 votes. Lyons took second with 758 votes, Michaels — the lone Republican in the race — won 729 votes and Brunello rounded out the quartet with 717 votes. The fifth candidate on the ballot, Rudy Grbavcich received 691 votes.

Steve Boyd received 965 votes in his unopposed candidacy for township supervisor, Mary Segalin received 936 votes to win a full term as clerk and Maria Graser won the township treasurer race with 695 votes. While Graser was the only name on the ballot, current treasurer Jyl Olson-DeRosso had filed papers to run as a write-in candidate. There were 361 write-in votes cast in the township treasurer race, although the Daily Globe was unable to confirm whether all the write-in votes were for Olson-DeRosso prior to deadline.

Erwin Township

The two Republicans running in the Erwin Township trustee race won the two seats on the board, with Democratic incumbent William Hellen losing his re-election bid by a single vote.

James Anderson received 35 percent of the votes in the race, with 109 votes. Incumbent Ray Brown took the second seat on the board with 102 votes to Hellen’s 101 votes.

Larry Grimsby won his uncontested re-election bid with 128 votes, Clerk Vicky Finco won the uncontested clerk race with 151 and former township treasurer Renee Hill — the only candidate on the ballot despite resigning in October — received 108.

Watersmeet Township

In the third contested trustee race in Gogebic County, Alan Piel and Bill Neumann won trustee seats.

Neumann received 428 votes, Piel received 347 votes and Julie Mathiesen rounded out the race with 333 votes.

Mike Rogers won the township supervisor race with 481 votes, Sandra Mansfield received 488 votes in the clerk race and Paul Kemppainen was elected treasurer with 481 votes.

Wakefield Township

In Wakefield Township, while there were no contested races; Supervisor John Cox won re-election by 150 votes, Clerk Mandy Lake won her race with 155 votes, Treasurer Joan Dalman received 151 votes and the trustee candidates — newcomer Jerry Niemi and incumbent James Spencer — received 142 and 121 votes, respectively.

Marenisco Township

There were also no contested races in Marenisco Township, where Supervisor Richard Bouvette received 232 votes, Clerk Donna Kenney received 247 votes, Treasurer Diane Dean received 240 votes and the trustee candidates — newcomer Kelly Dunbar and incumbent David Hagen — received 241 votes and 210 votes, respectively.

Bessemer Township

In Bessemer Township, the entire board was running for re-election without opposition. Supervisor Jeff Randall received 478 votes, Clerk Debbie Janczak received 478 votes, Treasurer Jerry Grenfell received 472 votes and trustees Beverly Ikola and Hope Tarnaski received 398 and 389 votes, respectively.
