Michael John 'Zip' Shea

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michael John “Zip” Shea, 65, of Houghton, lost a courageous battle with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia on Nov. 25, 2016.

He was born on March 11, 1951, in Ironwood, the son of the late John and Ann (Mesich) Shea.

Michael graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood in 1969. He was truly an “Ironwood Red Devil,” lettering in football, basketball and track. He graduated from Northern Michigan University in Marquette in 1973 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education.

He began his teaching career in Chassell in 1973, educating fifth and sixth graders. After 39 years with the district, he was a “family member” in the web of Chassell students, alumni, teachers and staff.

Michael was a tireless pillar of strength who lived with a strong love for life and his dedication to work. His passion was carpentry. He loved spending time in his yard and garage workshop, doing projects for family and friends.

He was an outdoor enthusiast who especially liked annual deer hunts and time spent at his camp. Michael was an avid Green Bay Packers and Detroit Tigers fan. He enjoyed watching golf and especially following Steve Stricker.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Houghton; daughter, Jacqueline (Matt) Esselman, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis .; sisters, MaryPat (David) Kelly, of Watersmeet, and Jane Campbell (Terry Abernathy), of Marquette; nieces, Patricia (Jay) Christopherson, of Rhinelander, Wis., and Abby (Karl) Shunk, of Marquette, and their children Lily and Wyatt. He is also survived by a special aunt and uncle, Ann and Mike Mesich, of Ironwood; and numerous cousins and friends.

Michael’s spirit and smile will be remembered by his family and friends. He never liked to have a fuss made over him, but was touched and amazed that so many people cared and supported him on his journey.

Out of respect for Michael’s wishes, cremation has taken place and was handled by Memorial Chapel in Hancock. Services will be held at a later date.
