Bessemer City Council to discuss plan for city

BESSEMER — Monday’s Bessemer City Council meeting at 5 p.m. in council chambers will discuss a new master plan for the city.

North of 45 LLC and Coleman Engineering provided Charly Loper, the city manager, with an outline and scope of work regarding the master plan. Loper said Coleman Engineering knows the community better, but North of 45 has more experience and specifically incorporates a “Winter City” concept into its planning.

In response to a request of contractors for the city to provide asbestos and lead paint assessments for the property at 206 S. Sophie St. before submitting bids for demolishment, Loper spoke with three separate engineering firms regarding environmental testing and would like to add three additional buildings west of Yale that are in terrible shape.

City attorney Michael Korpela provided Mayor Kathy Whitburn information regarding the legality of issuing bonuses from the Handbook for Municipal Officials. Council member John Frello was correct regarding the illegality of issuing funds not geared towards a clear public purpose.
