Harriette B. Norman

SARASOTA, Fla. - Harriette B. Norman, of Sarasota, passed away peacefully on Dec. 16, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Norman; two sisters, Nan M. Beasley and Olivia B. Powell; and one brother, William L. Beasley.

She was born in 1932 in Draper, N.C., and graduated from nursing school of City Memorial Hospital and as a nurse anesthetist from the Bowman Grey School of Medicine in Winston Salem, N.C. Her career began in the Memorial Hospital of Charlotte, N.C., in 1956, and later moved to Arlington County Hospital in Arlington, Va., in 1961.

In 1968, she accepted a position with the Agency for International Development, U.S. State Department, for a tour of duty in Vietnam. In 1970, she transferred to Gorgas Hospital, Panama Canal Zone, where she met Jim Norman and married in 1971.;

Upon retirement, she and Jim moved to Sarasota spending their summers in Mercer, Wis., at the family cottage. Active in retirement, she and Jim were volunteers at the Selby Gardens and Doctors Hospital of Sarasota.

Services will be held in Ironwood, Mich., later this year where Jim is buried.
