Ironwood city commissioners to tour industrial park

IRONWOOD — The Ironwood City Commission plans to get a closer look at the businesses that operate within the industrial park.

City commissioners agreed Monday to set up tours of the businesses. The first tour will be a two-hour excursion.

Xcel Energy has built new facilities in the industrial park, moving its offices from the Norrie Park area. Commissioners previously indicated a tour of the new facilities should be a priority.

City commissioner Rick Semo noted Monday the industrial park, which has 23 tenants, provides 450 jobs to area residents.

Commissioners discussed the best time to make the initial visit and agreed it should be around noon on a day when there’s no city commission meeting scheduled.

The city’s website notes the park offers three-phase electric service, high-speed Internet and full water and sewer hook-ups and is adjacent to the Gogebic Country Club golf course, Miners Memorial Heritage Park and Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail.

The lots that are available to be purchased are not prearranged, meaning they can be drawn to meet any operational and building need.

The website also includes a study compiled by the Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission, with the assistance of Michigan Technological University in Houghton, of energy possibilities at the industrial park that was released in April.
