Missing man found in Porkies

PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS — An Appleton, Wis. man traveling through the Porcupines Mountains was found safe Saturday morning.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by the family of Jordan Church, 30, after he failed to arrive at his destination.

Church was last heard from at 5 p.m., when he told his family he was roughly 45 minutes from his destination. According to a GCSD press release, his family contacted the sheriff’s department after he failed to arrive by 10 p.m.

Using cell phone towers, deputies were able to track Church’s route to Wakefield. From there, they searched County Road 519 North and South Boundary Road — finding vehicle tracks in the snow traveling east on the closed portion of the South Boundary Road, according to the release.

Using snowmobiles, deputies and officers with the Department of Natural Resources located Church’s vehicle in a ditch 5.5 miles east of the Presque Isle Park, with foot tracks leading east.

Church was found at roughly 6 a.m. Saturday 6.5 miles east of the vehicle, lying in the snow, “very tired but safe.”

He told officers he had been walking since 6 p.m., according to the release, and was then transported the remaining 12 miles to his destination at the Union River Cabin near Silver City.
