Ironwood — The remains of the man found dead in a city of Ironwood house on March 20 have been identified, according to the Ironwood Public Safety Department.

Gerald Glen Thompson was born in 1936, according to an IPSD Monday news release.

Family members have been notified, according to Adam Clemens, the IPSD officer who has been investigating the case. He said foul play is not suspected, but an investigation is continuing.

Clemens said the address of the house isn’t being released. He said the house is located in the middle of a block, there were neighbors and some mail had piled up.

Around 4 p.m. on March 20, IPSD officers responded to a report of human remains being found in the house that is set for demolition under a Hardest Hit grant the city has received. The building was scheduled to be torn down.

Structures with delinquent taxes for at least three years are eligible to be demolished as eyesores after the land is obtained on tax deeds through the county.

Thompson was the owner of the house and it appeared as if he had been dead for at least three years.

A neighbor contacted by the Daily Globe said he thought the man had left for North Dakota a few years ago. The neighbor said it was strange that there were two vehicles left in the driveway and he thought the mail delivery people also believed the man he described as “a loner” had moved.

“It shocked me,” the neighbor said of the discovery of the remains.

An online report said Thompson had registered to vote in Gogebic County in 2000.

The Gogebic County Medical Examiner’s office has been assisting the IPSD in the investigation.
