Missing New London man found in Iron County

HURLEY — The search for a missing New London, Wis., man ended Wednesday morning after he was found by a Hurley Police Department officer.

According to an Iron County Sheriff’s Department news release, the department received a report of the missing 71 year old at 7:06 a.m., Wednesday. The man, who had a possible medical condition, was last seen near Mosinee Road in the town of Oma.

According to the post, he had been alone at his cabin and hadn’t been heard from since Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies on en route to the cabin were informed relatives found his all-terrain vehicle stuck in a remote swamp on the family property.

This initiated a search — which included sheriff’s deputies, members of the Iron County Forestry Department, Iron County Emergency Management Director Stacy Ofstad, the Oma Fire Department, Mercer Department of Natural Resources station, the Hurley Police Department, Newbold Fire Department K9 Search and Rescue and Hurley resident Jay Zahn who provided the assistance of a drone. A DNR search plane was also en route to the area.

The search was called off at 11:56 a.m., when a HPD officer located the man walking on Riverside Drive.

According to the release, the man said he had spent the night in the woods after his ATV got stuck.

While he appeared fine, only suffering a few scratches and being cold, Beacon Ambulance was called to check his condition.
