Gregg D. 'Jocko' Giacomino

HURLEY, Wis. - Gregg D. "Jocko" Giacomino, 58, of Southgate Village, Hurley, died unexpectedly Friday, April 7, 2017, at home.

He was born Aug. 4, 1958, in Ironwood, Mich., son of Virginia (Smee) and the late Dominic Giacomino. He attended grade school in Iron Belt and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley in 1978. He then was employed at Netz Glove in Pence until it closed, at Jacquart Manufacturing in Ironwood for many years, Copps Bakery and Tom Davis Overhead Door in Hurley, and was always happy to work with Peter Zanella and his sons, Jeremy and Justin, at Twin City Dairy in Hurley.

Gregg was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, where he served as an usher and took up the collection when called upon, and was a former member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Pence. He was also a member of Hurley Knights of Columbus Council No. 669 and Pere Menard Assembly No. 471, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He served as a volunteer fireman for the City of Montreal, volunteered at the Paavo Nurmi Marathon and stocked shelves at the Iron County Food Pantry in Montreal. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and stock car races at ABC Raceway in Ashland and was a connoisseur of Wisconsin Badger memorabilia. Gregg was well known and well liked and you knew you were well liked in return when he called you " a piece of work."

Surviving are his mother, Virginia Giacomino, Pence; brother, Mark (Judy), Verona; sister, Lynne Dugolenski, Poynette; sister-in-law, Ilene Giacomino, Saxon; uncle, Everest Smee, Pence; nephew and godson, Josef (Jill) Giacomino, Detroit; nieces, Angela (Jerry) Giacomino-Gallo, Ironwood, Bria Giacomino, Iowa City, Iowa, and Madeline (Patrick) Falk, Minneapolis; three great-nephews, Peter, Ethan and Santino; two great-nieces, Kadey and Hanna; and numerous cousins.

Besides his father, who died in 1973, Gregg was predeceased by brothers, Dennis, in 1973, and Peter, in 1997; nephew, Dominic Giacomino, in 2002; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 12, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM, celebrant.

Luncheon will follow at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley.

Rite of Committal and inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley, later this spring.

Relatives and friends may call at the church from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, where members of Pere Menard Assembly No. 471, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, will serve as honor guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iron County Food Pantry, 72 Michigan Ave., Montreal, Wis. 54550.
