The DNR ORV Safety Course was held on Saturday at Gogebic Community College. Children for ages 10-15 were present to learn about safety measures and precautions when operating an ORV.

The course is held twice a year, once during the spring and once during the fall. The children arrived in the morning and were provided snacks, while being instructed by DNR Certified ORV Safety instructors Kim and Ross Kolesar and Gogebic County Sheriff's Department deputy Brandon Lyons.

After studying the material and viewing a demonstration on how to properly winch an ORV, the children were treated to pizza donated by Cloverland Motor Sports. "We try to make it fun for them while they learn how to be safe on the vehicles."

After lunch, the students watch a brief video before taking the required 50 question test. Upon passing the test, they are awarded a certificate of completion. The students may then bring their certificate to the Safety Department where they will receive first aid kits donated by Aspirus Grandview Hospital.

22 Children attended this year's spring course. Once they've gained their certificate, the children may ride the ORVs in accordance with Michigan regulations.
