Man gets federal prison for domestic violence

MARQUETTE — David Kel Baldwin Jr., 45, of Watersmeet, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for assault resulting in serious bodily injury, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Paul L. Maloney also ordered Baldwin to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term, pay a $2,000 fine and a $100 special assessment.

Baldwin pleaded guilty to the charge Feb. 2.

The charge stems from Aug. 12, 2016, when Baldwin — who is an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona — assaulted a female member of the Lac Vieux Desert Tribe in a house on Lac Vieux Desert tribal land.

The victim “suffered serious bodily injury as a result, and, if not treated promptly by medical personnel, would likely have died as a result of her injuries,” according to a news release.

The Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were among the agencies investigating the case, which Paul D. Lochner prosecuted.
