Bessemer — The Gogebic Miners co-operative football program, consisting of Wakefield-Marenisco, Bessemer, and Ironwood, officially has a head coach and three assistant coaches.

The school board agreed to hire Mark Mazzon as the new head coach Tuesday. Assisting Mazzon are Richard Matrella, Dave Lundin, and Joe Kuklinski, while a fifth football coaching position was left unfilled in the event enough kids turn out to warrant a fifth hire.

The Bessemer school board also approved membership of the Miners within the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

In other business, the board tabled a proposal to spend $5,000 on Massie Field updates and requesting the booster club match until a letter between the union and school can be agreed upon and settled. The school wants to put new soil on the baseball infield, repair the band shell, replace some wood in the bleachers, and paint the complex by using volunteer help and will bring this move back up after discussions with the union.

The Ironwood school board and Tim Kolesar, Ironwood superintendent, were in the audience for the announcement. It was the first time the two school boards had been in the same room according to Amanda Sprague.
