Wakefield — The Wakefield City Council held a public hearing during their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday night.

The hearing addressed the 2017-2018 budget as well as the .44 percent increase in property taxes. The council heard from members of the public, primarily regarding clarification of the tax increase.

Paul Anderson of Coleman Engineering was present at the meeting to update the council on the Maria Lane Street Improvement project. There was a bid from Angelo Luppino, Inc. to complete the project. The bid was below the projected costs by Coleman Engineering. The council voted to accept the bid. “It’ll be nice to have that done.” said council member, Patricia Mann.

The council held a discussion on the state of the changing house at Eddy Park. According to a recent report, the cost of the building’s reparation may outweigh the costs of tearing it down and building a new structure. The council decided to have the building tore down while taking additional future actions into consideration.

The Fourth of July Committee will be holding a Glow walk on Friday, June 30, and requested the use of the John Siira Pavilion for the event. The council approved the use of the pavillion. Registration for the walk will begin at 9 p.m. and the walk will begin at 10 p.m.

The fee for the use of the Pavilions and the Municipal Building for activities that are seen as a benefit to the citizens of Wakefield was discussed. The council voted to end the need to request the fee be waived in such cases.

The next city council meeting will be on Monday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m.
