Ready, set, Fourth!

Many communities plan holiday celebrations

The Fourth of July is a time for communities across the area to gather and celebrate.

Many communities have planned parades, games in the park and fireworks.

Not all the celebrations are on Tuesday, July 4, though, as the annual excitement builds with events in the days prior.

Ramsay

Bessemer Township will be the first to light up the sky with fireworks in the region tonight at dusk. That event is after a street dance that starts at 6 p.m. offering music, food and refreshments near the Town Hall, and a concert by Marty's Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps at around 8:30.

The Ramsay Fourth of July parade will be Tuesday, starting at 10 a.m.

Wakefield

While Wakefield will host a variety show on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Wakefield-Marenisco High School gymnasium, things really get going on Monday, starting with a town picnic at 1 p.m. at Eddy Park. There will be a concert in the park at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks over Sunday Lake at 10 p.m.

Tuesday begins the Sunday Lake Run at 8 a.m. (registration 6:45-7:45). The children's parade and general parade begin at 1 p.m. There will be children's races west of the school after the parade.

Bessemer

Bessemer has had events all week and things continue apace today through Tuesday.

Some of today's events include a Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra tribute show at 1 and 6 p.m. at Massie Field, and games on the street downtown at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday brings a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Mary Street at 9 a.m., a children's dance at 7 p.m. on Sophie Street and a water balloon toss at 7:30 p.m. on Sophie, as well, to name just a few of the events.

Monday brings more outdoor games downtown, including street bowling, Simon Says, bean bag toss and a water balloon launch. It concludes with a street dance at 9 p.m.

There will be family games and races at Massie Field on Tuesday 9:30 at a.m. The children's parade begins downtown at 1:30 p.m. The big parade starts at 7, followed by a concert by Marty's Goldenaires at 9:10 at Massie Field and the fireworks at 10.

Marenisco

Marenisco has three days of events planned, including Sunday's kayak races at noon, Wiffle ball tournament at 1:30 and community picnic - all at the Gogebic County Park on Lake Gogebic.

Monday brings the annual golf tournament at Gateway Golf Course, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Tuesday will be filled with food and games starting at 7 a.m. Some of the fun will include bed races and a volleyball tournament. The parade is set for 11 a.m. and will feature Marty's Goldenaires. The fireworks are set for dusk at Kimberly Field.

Hurley

Hurley's annual fireworks display over Lake Michele are set to begin at dusk.

Mercer

Mercer will kick the Fourth of July off on Tuesday with the 11th annual Run for a Vet at the MECCA Trails. The 5.5-mile run and 1.1-mile walk start at 8 a.m.

Mercer's parade will begin downtown at 11 a.m. It will be followed by games, music, food and refreshments in Carow Park from noon to 4 p.m.

The music will continue through evening, with fireworks set for dusk.
