The University of Wisconsin Extension office will be offering a Food Preservation course during July and August. The course consists of two classes for the corresponding areas. With two being held in Hurley and the same two being offered in Mercer.

The course instructor, Iron and Ashland County Family Living Educator, Heidi Ungrodt will be doing demonstrations of two different canning techniques. The theme of the course will be “Sweet & Savory in a Jar.”

For the first course, Ungrodt will be demonstrating hot water bath canning. She will be making a blueberry lavender jam and a festive salsa.

For the second class, Pressure Canning 101, she will be making green beans and carrot fennel soup. “Each participant can bring home a jar of each recipe.” said Becky Holm, Iron County UW Extension Office Manager.

The Hurley classes will be held at the school on July 11th and August 8th from 5:30- 7:30 pm and at the Mercer School on July 20th and August 10th from 9-11 am. Minors may attend the class if accompanied by an adult.

Tuition is $15 for one class, $25 (a $5 discount) to take both. Registration for the classes will be closed after Monday. Contact the Iron County UW Extension office at 715-561-2695 for more information or stop by their office at 300 Taconite Street, Suite 118 at the Iron County Courthouse in Hurley.
