Roland Keith Lindberg

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Roland Keith Lindberg, 89, a long-time resident of Ironwood Township, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, Aug. 9, 2017, after a brief illness.

Roland was born on May 23, 1928, in Ironwood, the son of Karlton Axel and Edna Amelia (Tillner) Lindberg. He attended A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer and graduated in 1946 as class valedictorian.

On Sept. 26, 1946, Roland enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country as a technician fifth grade, while stationed in Guam for one year. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 12, 1948. Roland received the World War II Victory Medal.

Upon returning from the service, Roland attended Michigan Technological University and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

On Sept. 20, 1952, Roland was united in marriage to Carol Jean Leinonen in Ironwood.

They made their home in White Pine, and Roland worked at White Pine Copper Company.

In 1960, Roland and Carol moved to Ironwood Township, where they built their home on Lake Road at the base of Maple Hill Bluff on a piece of property formerly owned by Johnson Farms.

Roland then went to work for Cherne Contracting Corporation, where he served as plant manager and lead draftsman for 25 years. Roland retired in 1985.

Roland was always well liked by all who knew him, and he was known as "Lindy" by all who worked with him.

He enjoyed gardening, yardwork, fishing, bird hunting and cheering on the Minnesota Vikings and the Milwaukee Brewers with his son, Craig.

He took great pleasure spending time at the family cottage at Lake Gogebic which he built in 1956, with the help of family members, and owned for 40 years until 1996.

Roland will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed help.

Roland is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; a son, Craig, Ironwood Township; his sister-in-law, Mary Leinonen, North Port, Fla .; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and a host of friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Leinonen, in childhood, and Elaine (Herbert) Swanbeck; and his brother-in-law, Vernon Leinonen.

Cremation will take place, and there will be no funeral service.
