Hurley — The Hurley K-12 School is hoping to offer college credits for certain tech ed classes through an agreement with Gogebic Community College.

The Hurley School Board discussed entering a credit articulation agreement with the college at its regular meeting Monday evening, according to Hurley School Administrator Chris Patritto.

“It’ll be a pilot program to start,” said Patritto. “We’re looking at our curriculum here and deciding what would be good for college credits there. We have to make some minor tweaks to match their curriculum requirements, but we should have at least one of them to start with soon.”

Patritto hopes the collaboration grows, including having Hurley tech ed teacher Jake Hostettler teach a college course at the Hurley School.

“Some of their students will come here for a night class or during the day for labs,” said Patritto.

He sees it as a collaboration with potential to grow.

“Hopefully, as we move down the line they have a CAD class over there that a few of our kids who are interested might go over there,” said Patritto. “We can work together over the course of years to build something. We’ve got the equipment here and support from local businesses. Why shouldn’t we share resources? I just think with the resources we have together, we can grow over the course of time.”

In other action on Monday, the school board:

—Approved the purchase of new LED lighting in the parking lot. The total cost of $9,500 will be offset partially by a $2,200 of Focus on Energy grant. Patritto said the school will save $2,000 a year.

—Hired Holly Hewitt and Amanda Dryer as associates and STARS employees.
