Cool August brought rain

Ironwood - Precipitation in Ironwood in August was nearly twice the long-term average during an unusually cool month, according to National Weather Service figures.

While Ironwood ended the month with 5.62 inches of rain at the official weather station, the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant off U.S 2, other locations across the Gogebic Range received considerably more precipitation.

The average rainfall for Ironwood, dating back 116 years, is 3.37 inches, according to the NWS.

The August record for rainfall in Ironwood is the 8.86 inches that was measured in 1941, while the low is .48 inch in 1930.

For the year; precipitation stands at 26.24 inches, compared to the long-term average of 22.08 inches.

In 1949, there was a trace of snow in Ironwood in August.

The average temperature for August of 70.6 degrees this year was well below the long-term average of 74.5 degrees.

The average temperature for 2017 of 42.4 degrees is slightly above the norm of 42 degrees.

Better days ahead

After more rain and cold weather today and Thursday, next weekend looks good in Ironwood, with mostly sunshine and temperatures in the 70s, followed by another week of mild, sunny weather.

Temperatures in Ironwood on a rainy Tuesday in the afternoon were in the high 40s, or 20 degrees below average.
