Ironwood - Those participating in today's Bridges and Bluffs Half Marathon had the opportunity for some last minute carbo-loading while picking up their race packets Friday night as the Cold Iron Brewery in Ironwood also played host to the Ironwood cross country team's spaghetti feed.

"It's been going very well, it's hopping in here," coach Ben Schmandt said. "Definitely, the people are coming in. It's a beautiful night and it's going to be a great event tomorrow."

Schmandt said the team sold 300 tickets to the fundraiser, with the proceeds going to support the team.

"We're a self-funded sport, so basically the money goes toward our expenses for the season," he explained.

He said the marathon organizers reached out to the team to see if they wanted to participate in the event, where those participating in the runs could pick up their race packets the night before the inaugural event.

In addition to the "great support" the team has received from the race organizers, Schmandt also thanked all the parents and local businesses that contributed to making the fundraiser the success it was.

With 20 high school kids competing this season, Schmandt said Ironwood's entire grades 6-12 cross country program has 35 participants.

The team's season roughly runs from August to October.
