Bessemer City Council to hold hearing on ATV trail group

BESSEMER — The Bessemer city council will hold a public hearing on the special use request by the Gogebic Range Trail Authority this evening at 5:30 at city hall.

The GRTA is requesting approval as sponsors for off-road vehicle use of the trail. It already is the designated sponsor for the same trail for snowmobiles.

The GRTA says the people living beside the trail in Bessemer are already accustomed to the sound of snowmobile traffic on the trail and the trail has been an unofficial ORV trail for many years. This special use permit would allow the GRTA to apply for ORV grants and to address some of the grading and issues with the trail as it moves through Bessemer.

Dan Matonich sent correspondence to the council regarding Hillcrest Cemetery rules and rates. Matonich is against changing the current rules regarding resident versus non-resident costs for the cemetery, which the council discussed in the last meeting, as it will move some of the burden of costs to local residents seeking a plot there.

The council will also address the new Master Plan. The Planning Commission adopted the plan last week during its meeting and now the council has the option to adopt or reject the plan.
