Bessemer - The Gogebic County Forestry and Parks Commission met in Bessemer Thursday before hitting the road to visit parks and some timber holdings under their management.

While in Bessemer, the commission agreed to donate an extra half-ton truck to the sheriff's department for use by the Search and Rescue team. According to the commission, the current vehicle the SAR team uses to pull the trailer is insufficient for the job and the truck would make a significant improvement in the ability to bring equipment to rescue sites.

After agreeing to transfer the truck to the sheriff's department, the commission voted 5-0 for claims for the fiscal year and October.

The commission called a temporary recess before driving through Marenisco on the way to Lake Gogebic State Park.

The commission reviewed two fresh slabs of concrete. The first slab reviewed is for the caretaker's home, which is currently sinking in the mud. The new location also moves the caretaker closer to the entrance and access road to the park.

The second slab is for a storage building that will house equipment on-site in the park year round. The new building, according to the commission, is being up for bid soon with hopes of having it constructed before the winter arrives.

The group walked around the park as a bald eagle soared overhead. The group discussed ongoing projects and wish lists of things it wants to update or change. Most of the campsites have already been upgraded to 50-amp service, but the plan is to complete updating the electrical at the rest of the sites.

The group discussed updating the bathrooms in the park. The buildings have stone facades and look nice, but the internal workings are old. The walking path to the upper latrine is in bad shape and a potential hazard for people walking into the restroom. The fishing dock, which the group thought cost around $100,000 when it was new, is beginning to show signs of wear. The group walked the dock and contemplated how significant of a grant would be required to either repair or replace the current fishing dock.

In an open area near the swimming area, the commission considered putting a new playground and picnic area close to the water. The thought was if the new equipment and picnic area was located close to the water, parents would be able to watch their children swimming while sitting in the picnic area.

The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 16 in Bessemer.
