Craft fair fills Hurley School

HURLEY - While many Gogebic Range residents were pursuing deer on the first day of Wisconsin's gun-deer season on Saturday, others were hunting for bargains in a festive atmosphere at the Hurley K-12 School's annual craft fair.

More than 40 vendors were on hand, filling the commons area of the school and elementary gymnasium.

Among the vendors in the small gym was the school's Northwoods Manufacturing team of students, offering for sale numerous items produced right there at the school. Six students represented Northwoods Manufacturing at the table. They were selling wood-crafted items and pens, while also offering brochures on the program.

The student-run business out of the school's technology education department teaches students how to develop a good work ethic and produce manufactured products from metal and wood. Students are encouraged to prepare themselves for the work world ahead after high school.

The Silver Express performed at noon and Santa Claus arrived later to greet the kiddies, who also had the opportunity to have their faces painted during the fair.

"It looks like a bigger crowd than last year," said Hurley City Council member Jamey Francis, who attended in the afternoon.

Booster club member Bill Ceccon was pleased with the turn-out.

The parking lots filled early and stayed that way through the afternoon.

The Hurley Midget Booster Club sponsors the annual event, which not only raises money from vendors' fees, but gives the merchants a chance to display their wares to the public, which has the chance to a jump on Christmas shopping.

The club also sells food and refreshments during the event.

Baked goods and raffles were also a part of the activities in gloomy Saturday weather.
